Beauty and the Industry

A friend of mine sent me a link to this Dove ad about the influences of the beauty industry on young girls. It begins with a close-up of one young girl in slow motion, then goes to high-speed images of messages from the beauty industry. The same song plays throughout and the beat of the song corresponds to the speed of the images flashing. I think it's a highly modified version of a Beatles song?

Anyway, the message of confidence and not needing to conform to the beauty industry's version of attractiveness is an important one.

This was really interesting and I think the editing of both sound and images, and especially how they worked together was really powerful. The slow motion at the beginning and then the fast paced clips toward the middle and end really changed the pace and how you view the video. I went to youtube and checked out a bunch of other ones in the Dove lineup.

To move on to our next discussion...did you notice that most of the images they use are of beautiful white, fairly pale skin? They throw in a minority or two in some of them, but the overall imagery is still of the same pure, white skin America teaches us is beautiful. How can we debunk that myth if that's all that is shown?

What an excellent video! This would work well in the classroom as a study on the fashion industry. I thought it was very well done and had a very powerful messgae. I particularly liked the way in which they started with a close-up of a young girls face and then showed a bunch of clips very quickly of women's quest to fit that beauty ideal. It almost seemed to me like a stream of consciousness, in and out, trying to make sense of it all. The last line was the most powerful when it states talk to your daughter before the beauty industry does. Great clip!
